What Does an Automotive Service Technician Do?Automotive service technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain cars, trucks, and light vehicles. A typical day moves from inspecting vehicles brought in for service, to pinpointing mechanical or electrical issues with hands on diagnosis and computerized scan tools, to making the repairs. That can be anything from a routine brake job to a complex engine performance problem. The work is hands on and varied. Technicians use pneumatic wrenches, lathes, jacks, hoists, and multimeters, and they work more and more with the onboard computers that run modern vehicles. As cars add electronic systems like accident avoidance sensors and hybrid and electric powertrains, technicians spend more of their day working with software and electronics alongside traditional mechanical work.
